The Problem with Modern-Day Music Discovery
In 2024, more music was released in one day than in the entirety of 1983. With this near-infinite choice, how do you find new underground music that truly matters?
The basic answer is Spotify’s algorithmic playlists, which cater to every niche with their frankly bizarre micro-genres (Goblin & Pirate Mix, anyone?). But as we rely on more algorithms, the nuance and emotional context from human curation are dying out. The role of reviewers, radio stations, and tastemakers is less relevant every single day. That sucks. However, I believe there’s a crucial role for human finesse in music discovery. And hey! I guess that’s where I come in.
Why I’m Starting YEOW
My mission is simple: I want to share everything about underground rock, pop, and folk music that excites me. I’m a musician and an artist; not a writer. These are the values I hold dear. That’s pretty much it. There are thousands of incredible artists hiding in plain sight, just waiting for an audience. Sure, I might not have an audience yet (who’s going to actually read this first post anyway?). But this is where I can shine a light on what’s hot in the underground music scene.
Who is YEOW for?
Often, a new artist’s first fans are fellow musicians. It makes sense that passionate music lovers would be the first to discover talented small acts. I’m starting this blog for musicians- particularly, underrepresented artists. I’m biased towards Nashville’s music scene since that’s my home base, but I’m here to share any artist that’s exciting enough. My taste leans towards alternative rock, shoegaze, folk, and pop. And I’ll only share things I can put a positive spin on- I’m not here to burn bridges or be harsh.
If you have music or wish your friend’s band had more interest, send it my way. I’m always down to hear something new.
What’s Next?
For now, I’ll post every other Monday. Next, I’ve got an artist feature for one of my good friends. Trust me, you’ll want to stay and check it out. If you’re passionate about discovering new artists, picking up some production tips, and supporting the underground music scene, follow my socials and join my newsletter for monthly updates on things that couldn’t make it to the blog. I’m still totally new to blogging, so give me a break while I figure this out.
